Janis Löhrer (born in Aachen in 1991, lives and works in Berlin) studied Fine Arts and Painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and graduated with a diploma in 2019. He received a scholarship from the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (2015 to 2019) and the Fine Arts Award of the State Capital of Düsseldorf (2024).
Central to Janis Löhrer’s artistic practice are questions of queer identity, embodiment, masculinity, and shame. His work approaches public space as a stage for hidden encounters and homosexual desire, while searching for moments of privacy and solitude within it. His ceramic objects, representations of everyday items such as dirty trainers, urinals, trash bins, sweatpants, and jockstraps, suggest use yet remain detached from any identifiable owner. This anonymity offers an intimate glimpse into a parallel world structured by distinctly queer codes and relations. His drawings navigate the tension between interior and exterior and probe forms of access and belonging, even under restrictive social norms.
